Job Details
 The Programme Manager (West Africa) will lead and manage the International Alert Programme in the region, ensuring that it is:

• staffed by talented and motivated people
• based on a clear, sound strategy
• funded to allow both sustainability of programming and innovation
• comprised of projects which are implemented and evaluated with a discernable impact on peace
• managing resources well, with due regard for Alert’s, donors’ and other norms.

In addition to several years’ experience of implementing peacebuilding or related work in the field, in conflict-affected contexts either in or in places similar to the region, the successful candidate will have sound experience in project/programme management – preferably within an international NGO. You will have designed several project proposals which attracted funding, have experience of donor relations, and have worked in a variety of operational partnerships. The ability to lead and manage complex cross-cultural teams, coupled with the ability to adapt to a changing environment, is essential.
Work experience in and a strong grasp of the political context of the region is desirable, as is the ability to write fluently in French to a high professional standard. You will need to travel frequently to the region. Occasional trips elsewhere can also be expected.
For the Programme Manager (Peacebuilding Issues Programme), the successful candidate will have several years’ experience of project/programme management and peacebuilding work – preferably within an international NGO. Applicants will also have a strong and proven capacity to lead and manage effective teams, including change management.
You will be up-to-date on the ways that the issues on which Alert works affect the prospects for peace, and have experience working on peacebuilding issues in conflict-affected contexts. You are adept at managing relationships. You are also good at identifying strategic priorities and communicating these to others in an inspiring way. Skills and experience in at least two of the following is also essential: research, training and advocacy.
Practical experience in impact evaluation is desirable, as is a second international language in addition to English, such as French, Arabic, Russian and/or Spanish. You will need to travel irregularly to conflict-affected countries and to Western capitals.
Applicants for both posts will be able to communicate clearly and cogently in English, in writing and speech, and be able to demonstrate a track record in thinking strategically.
