CUTS Africa Resource Centre (CUTS ARC) officially referred to as CUTS Centre for International Trade, Economics and Environment (CUTS CITEE) is a regional Organisation that seeks to promote consumer protection, poverty reduction and trade development through economic policy, training and advocacy.  

In addition, the Centre seeks to consolidate and expand the activities of South-South civil society cooperation.

We are looking to recruit an experienced and innovative
Programme Officer

The Programme Officer will provide support to the Centre Director to deliver the overall objectives and goals of the Trade and Development programme in line with CUTS-CITEE's Strategy

Objectives of CUTS CITEE’s work in the area of trade & development: 
 
1. To enhance and strengthen the role of civil society organizations in the Eastern Africa region in trade- policy advocacy.
 
2. To clarify and strengthen channels of influence for civil society organizations in the Eastern Africa region in trade and economic policy-making processes, on the national, regional and global levels

Responsibilities
  • The Programme Officer (PO) will provide support to the Director to deliver the overall objectives and goals of the trade and development programme in line with the CUTS CITEE’’s Strategy.
  • The Programme Officer (PO) will support the design and development of innovative project proposals and their successful implementation, to build the reputation of CUTS CITEE in Eastern Africa and its mission to fight poverty through trade.
  • Undertaking research and policy analysis of the implications of specific trade agreements on the East African region as a whole or on specific Eastern Africa countries or sectors
  • Monitoring specific progress of negotiations on agreements identified as priority for the work on CUTS CITEE
  • Help bring together a special newsletter on trade and development issues
  • Help develop further programmatic plans for CUTS CITEE in the area of trade and development
  • Keeping CUTS CITEE website updated with news and materials about trade issues
Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in areas related to development economics, international trade, development studies
  • Solid knowledge of issues pertaining to trade and development, mechanisms and agreements of the World Trade Organization, Multi-lateral Trade Agreements (ACP-EU, AGOA, bilateral free trade agreements, global governance issues, social and economic rights
  • Familiarity with civil society campaigns on trade issues and general policy stands on trade and development issues
  • Previous experience with civil society organizations working on advocacy and lobbying
  • Proficiency in English, additional knowledge of French will be an added advantage
  • Commitments to values of economic rights, justice, and sustainable development
