This is a challenging but rewarding time to work in South Sudan. Tearfund – a leading relief and development charity, seeks a courageous, experienced leader to guide their programme through the potentially volatile period following the January 2011 referendum on independence.
Tearfund’s disaster management team has been working in South Sudan since 1998, and currently provides humanitarian assistance to over 400,000 beneficiaries in remote areas of Jonglei, Bahr el Ghazal, and Upper Nile states. These areas were severely affected by Sudan’s long civil war; they continue to be underserved and underdeveloped, and are subject to continued conflict and natural disasters. Tearfund has cultivated strong community relationships in, and understanding of, these areas.
The assistance provided in South Sudan by Tearfund’s team includes: primary health care; water, sanitation and hygiene promotion; food security; nutrition; integrated health promotion; and, when necessary, emergency response. They seek to build the capacity of community and government actors to continue the reliable delivery of these basic services.
Tearfund requires a determined and inspiring individual to provide programmatic and spiritual leadership for its South Sudan team. The Programme Director will be responsible for ensuring the successful implementation of its 2-year strategy, while also adapting it as necessary to post-referendum realities. Leading a team of project managers and technical specialists, you will ensure that Tearfund’s work has a transformational impact on the people it serves in South Sudan.
