Programme Director - based in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for Tearfund

We are seeking to fill the post of Programme Director to lead Tearfund's operational programme in DR Congo.

Tearfund is a leading relief and development charity, working in partnership with Christian agencies and churches worldwide to tackle the causes and effects of poverty. Tearfund works in over 50 countries, through a network of 300 partners and 1,500 staff.

Tearfund has been implementing large scale humanitarian and recovery projects in Eastern DR Congo since 2002. The programme currently has 15 international staff, 150 national staff and an annual turnover of £3.5 million. Projects are implemented in 3 locations, covering Watsan, Food Security, and Public Health Promotion.


We are looking for a Programme Director with proven humanitarian sector experience plus strong leadership and management skills in order to lead the programme in accordance with Tearfund’s approach to good practice, policy and strategy. The post-holder will have responsibility for revising and outworking the strategy for Tearfund’s operational work in DR Congo, together with leading the senior management team responsible for programme implementation, logistics, finance and human resources. Strong experience is also required in budget management, donor relations, proposal development and reporting, as well as donor and corporate compliance. The post-holder will also be responsible for representing Tearfund, liaising with and advocating to Government departments, UN bodies, INGOs and local Partners in DRC.

Job Details

The role will require frequent travel to field sites. Applicants will be educated to degree level and must have substantive up to date working knowledge of humanitarian environments within an International NGO environment. Knowledge and experience using MS-Office packages is essential as are excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including advanced conversational French language ability. Experience in DRC is desirable. Applicants must be committed to Tearfund’s Christian beliefs.
