Summary: Our client is an exporter of
flowers grown by farmers in Kenya. They manage both own-farms and out-growers
striving to ensure that the quality of their flowers from farm to end-user is
paramount to international standards.
They are
looking to fill the role of the Production
Manager who will
take charge of entire production process from planning based on targeted sales
volumes to delivery of quality products to the packhouse; a major part of
this will be overseeing the agronomic practices on all the farms to ensure best
yield and to satisfy market demand.
Key Responsibilities- Develop
and implement sustainable and time bound strategies and operational plans
for extension services for selected crops.
- Supervise
and support the agronomists and their field teams on efficient and
effective delivery of training programs at field level to improve crop
productivity, post-harvest handling, and incomes of small holders.
- Facilitate
innovation and use of technology to improve yield and post-harvest
handling.
- Facilitate
the development of learning and training materials as well as information
and communication bulletins.
- Ensure
organization and implementation of farmer field days, farmers’ exchange
visits, exposure visits for government officials and other partners as
well as such similar learning and awareness creation endeavors.
- Supervise
in conjunction with other Agronomic staff as may be required, field
surveys related to agriculture and livelihood such as yield measurement,
adoption rates, impact of extension services etc
- Contribute
to organization’s quarterly and annual planning meetings and budgeting
process by furnishing timely information on the agronomic aspect of crop
cultivation.
- Write
monthly, quarterly summaries and annual reports to the sector managers as
may be required for the purpose of program documentation, M&E and
reporting to board of directors
- Plan
for the hiring and management of production staff.
- Liaise
with Production team in production planning and ensure implementation of
area production plan
- Planning
and organizing the carrying out of demos and trials and analyzing demo results
for production planning.
- Ensure
that production intensification approaches are environmentally sustainable
and market relevant.
- Engage
the regional and county government in strategizing and planning to improve
agricultural programs and practices.
- Support
the market development unit to facilitate linkages of program producers
groups to relevant value chain actors for improved profitability for
farmers.
- Ensure
adequate and useful communications linkages are maintained between the
project management, the communities and other stakeholders in a
transparent manner that eliminates confusion.
- Logistic
planning and execution for inputs and produce for own-farm crops
- Develop
and ensure implementation of spray programs
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelors
Degree in Horticulture, Agronomy or any relevant agricultural field
- Minimum
of four (4) years in a horticulture farm with growing responsibilities
- A
solid understanding of the challenges of working with contract farmers
- Broad
knowledge of the international flower business
- Experience
of managing field based staff
- Good
communication skils both oral and written
- Strong
planning and organizational skills
- Ability
to work effectively under pressure and with minimum supervision
