Job Summary
The
Administrative and Tutoring Assistant provides essential administrative support
and student tutoring for the Writing Center. Reporting directly to the Director
of the Writing Center, this entry-level position serves as a central point of
contact for students, faculty, and staff.
The
incumbent manages day-to-day office operations, helps students develop core
writing and language competencies across diverse fields, organizes center
activities, takes meeting minutes, and drafts administrative reports.
This
role requires integrity, strong communication skills, diagnostic insight into
writing, and a commitment to supporting student academic success in a liberal
arts university environment.
Key Responsibilities
Tutoring
& Academic Support Services:
Provide
high-quality tutoring support to students across all academic disciplines,
accurately diagnosing foundational writing needs in grammar, mechanics,
structural organization, and source integration.
Guide
students through all stages of the writing process—including brainstorming,
outlining, drafting, revising, and formatting—regardless of their major or
subject area.
Analyze
unfamiliar academic assignment types and adapt feedback strategies to help
students meet discipline-specific writing requirements.
Conduct
short presentations, workshops, and orientation sessions covering effective
writing techniques, academic integrity, and center resources.
Assist
in developing and updating writing resources, instructional handouts, and
reference materials for students.
Administrative
& Operational Support:
Serve
as the Writing Center's primary administrative contact, providing prompt,
courteous, and professional assistance to visitors, students, and university
staff members.
Take
clear, accurate minutes at departmental meetings and prepare routine
administrative reports, summaries, and correspondence for the Director.
Plan
and coordinate Writing Center events, including workshops and student academic
programs.
Schedule
tutoring appointments, monitor student sign-ins, and maintain accurate usage
logs and databases for center activities.
Manage
physical and electronic records, files, correspondence, and documentation in
compliance with university record-keeping standards.
Monitor
office supply inventories, coordinate requests for materials and equipment, and
ensure the center remains orderly and welcoming.
Handle
confidential student and institutional data with the utmost discretion and
integrity.
Perform
other related duties as assigned by the Director of the Writing Center.
Requirements for the
Position
A
Bachelor’s Degree in English Language, Literature, Linguistics (English
concentration), English Education, or a closely related field from a reputable
tertiary institution.
Minimum
of one (1) year of post-NYSC experience in the same or similar position
garnered in an academic environment.
Strong
foundational knowledge of English grammar, mechanics, academic writing
conventions, and structural organization across disciplines.
Demonstrated
ability to diagnose higher-order writing issues (e.g., thesis development,
logical flow, and paragraph structure) in cross-disciplinary student texts.
Basic
office organizational and administrative skills.
Proficiency
in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general email and
web applications.
Excellent
oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain writing and
language concepts clearly to students with varied academic backgrounds.
Ability
to quickly learn and navigate common academic citation styles (e.g., APA, MLA,
Chicago).
Prior
experience in tutoring, teaching, peer mentoring, or writing assistance at the
secondary or tertiary level is an advantage.
High
level of personal and professional integrity, with a demonstrated ability to
safeguard the confidentiality of sensitive student records.
Ability
to collaborate effectively within a diverse, multicultural liberal arts
university community.
