Job Context: With long standing experience in development programmes and advocacy, Hivos’ East Africa Regional Hub is looking to fill the position of a Project Officer for the Women@Work Campaign, situated within the Open domain.
The
Women@Work Campaign anchors Hivos’ substantive work on Corporate Accountability
and Productive Labour.
Founded in
2012, the Women@Work Campaign aims to contribute to decent work for women who
earn their living through global production chains, most notably: flowers,
fruits, vegetables and pulses, grown for the export market.
The
Campaign involves Southern partners spread over Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and
Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, enlisting local and
international multi-sectoral partnerships.
The
Campaign has adopted a number of core strategies, including: promoting an
effective social certification regime to influence value-chain practices;
contributing to law and policy reform; building the capacities of workers and
workers’ representatives; and, promoting engendered corporate social
responsibility.
This is
supplemented by a consumer advocacy component in The Hague, The Netherlands,
aimed at promoting ethical consumerism and proactive engagement with Northern
governments as well as businesses.
The Project Officer Women@Work Campaign works under the supervision of the Regional Project Manager Women@Work Campaign (Eastern Africa).

She/he will
provide technical support for the various result areas within the Programme and
provide strategic guidance to the Women@Work teams in Eastern Africa, Southern
Africa and in The Hague, and collaborates programmatically with the Women’s Empowerment
Programme in Eastern Africa.
The Project
Officer works as the liaison between Hivos and the partners in the Programme
and ensures that the Programme outcomes are delivered in the highest quality
possible.
The
position is based in Nairobi with regular travel to the Eastern Africa region.
Your responsibilities
- Provide
technical direction, strategic advice and leadership in the implementation
of the Women@Work Campaign’s Result Based Social Certification Project in
Eastern Africa.
- Identify
and select programme partners and consultants, nurture and manage
relationships, programme development, project assessment and reporting.
- Develop
and support the implementation of a capacity development strategy for
Programme partners together with the Regional Project Manager.
- Advising
on Women@Work partnership building and network strengthening to reach the
Programme results and managing partner and stakeholder relationships
(including partner contracts and reporting obligations) with selected
partners.
- Prepare
and manage contracts of service providers, partners, and donors through
prudent planning and provision technical, logistical, and administrative
guidance and making use of Hivos platforms such as Osiris.
- Contribute
to the development of external communication about the Women@Work
Campaign, in collaboration with the relevant Programme Staff.
- Create
and support active linkages with Hivos’ programmes related in East Africa
and globally to learn and exchange best practices and contribute to other
programme support roles within Hivos’ Women’s Empowerment Team whenever
required by the Programme Manager or the Regional Director.
Candidate
Profile:
- Advanced
university degree in Social Sciences or a relevant discipline.
- At
least 5 years of relevant working experience and good knowledge of labour
rights and/or gender protection programming and advocacy.
- Working
experience and good knowledge and understanding of “Sustainability
Certification” frameworks, substantive social issues in certification, and
related, current developments and trends.
- Experience
in grant making, proposal writing, programme and project assessment and
reporting.
- Ability
to work effectively in multi-regional teams and partners with members
drawn from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures and disciplines.
- Ability
to work under pressure, often to tight deadlines without compromising the
quality of deliverables.
- Strong
English language skills; both written and spoken.
- Willingness
to travel from time to time.
- High
level of personal integrity and accountability.
