icipe - African
Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded
by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry
out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management
of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the
tropics.
icipe wishes to
urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Clerk of Works.

The position is
tenable in Nairobi, Kenya at the icipe Duduville campus.
This is a
two-year contract, with a possibility of extension after successfully
completing a six-month probation period of the first contract.
A competitive
compensation package will be offered to the right candidate.
Overall Purpose of the Job: The Clerk of Works will oversee all
construction works of icipe.
Responsibilities:
The primary duty
shall be to act as an inspector on behalf of the Project Consultants (through
the Lead Consultant) under their direction, and the Contractor shall afford
every reasonable facility for the performance of that duty.
The Clerk of
Works shall at all times communicate in writing (monthly reports, fortnightly
reports, weekly reports and memos) to the Project Consultants (through the Lead
Consultant).
All communication
to the Project Consultants through the Lead Consultant shall be copied to the
client, KPLC RBS.
The Clerk of
Works shall not at all issue direct instructions to the Contractor. The Project
Consultants (through the Lead Consultant) in collaboration with the
Architect/Engineer shall be the one to communicate to the Contractor.
The Clerk of
Works, as every other member of the Construction Team is expected to carry his
duties with reasonable care and with diligence and dispatch.
In addition the
Clerk of Works, by his personality and demeanor, will make a vital contribution
to the successful working of the Construction Team.
The Clerk of
Works is responsible to the Project Consultants (through the Lead Consultant).
He acts as the
inspector on site to ensure that the Project Consultants (through the Lead
Consultant) is made aware if the Contractor deviates from carrying out the
works in strict accordance with the contract specifications and drawings.
In certain
circumstances he may use such directions as he is empowered to do under the
contract, but in accordance with the policies set down by the Project
Consultants (through the Lead Consultant) at the time of his appointment.
He should record
and report progress, conditions, events, deviations and information necessary
for a proper evaluation of the Contractor’s performance, both currently and, if
required, retrospectively.
He will, from
time to time, assist other members of the building team in accordance with the
policies set down by the Project Consultants (through the Lead Consultant).
Knowledge Required for Performing the Job
- Inspect all work in progress and advise on actual progress in the relation to the works programme.
- Maintain the daily construction report in the prescribed format.
- Check site grid and setting out as work proceeds.
- Inform the Contractor, the Architect and the Project Manager of work not conforming to contract documents.
- Inspect materials delivered to Site and report to Architect/Engineer
- Visit work proceeding in workshop off-site and report to Architect/Engineer
- Organize and submit materials testing schedule
- Inform Architect/Engineer of any discrepancies in drawings or Bills of Quantities
- Inform Architect/Engineer of outstanding information required
- Advise Architect/Engineer of non practical solutions where requested
- Attend all site meetings and other Architect’s meetings including Main Contractors meetings with the sub-contractors co-ordination meetings.
- Assist Consultants in preparing snag lists as project nears completion.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Minimum of O-Level certificate or its equivalent with a min grade of C+.
- Diploma or Higher National Diploma in construction related courses.
- Minimum experience of 5 years in Site supervision in jobs of not less than KSh. 200 Million or higher.
- 3 positive Letters of reference from previous employers.

Reporting
This position
reports to the Director of Finance and Administration.
