Malteser
International is a German non-governmental organization with its headquarters
in Cologne / Germany. Malteser was founded in 1956 and is currently
implementing more than 100 projects in about 20 countries worldwide.
In August 2012,
Malteser International opened an office in Illeret, Marsabit County/ Northern
Kenya with the aim to address the needs of the pastoralist population of the
area, by supporting sustainable solutions, drought resilience and disaster
preparedness.
Current activities, to be implemented until the end of 2013, aim at increasing the access to safe drinking water, mainly through rainwater harvesting techniques at household and community level accompanied by health/hygiene education activities.
To support our
programme in Illeret/Northern Kenya, MalteserInternational is looking for two
positions to be filled:
WASH Expert
in order to expand
its capacity with a concerned specialist for the software components of its
WASH activities.
Position
Summary
The Wash Expert will
be responsible for developing tools and activities in community hygiene
awareness and water use in Illeret which is mandatory prior expanding hardware
components like
community water systems and private latrines.

This will be done
under the supervision of the Programme Coordinator, in close collaboration with
the Community Support Officer of the project, and with administrative and
logistic support by the Country Office in Nairobi.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
- On-the-job
training of the Community Support Officer (CSO) in WASH related components
- Train team of
hygiene promoters to carry out hygiene promotion sessions in the
communities and at the schools
- Develop Hygiene
Promotion Plan
- Develop Water
Safety Plans for:
- Household level
rainwater harvesting systems
- Use of shallow
wells in laggas (dry riverbeds)
- Community
rainwater harvesting systems
- Guide process of
developing IEC materials appropriate for the local socio-cultural context
- Conduct
Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) sessions, and evaluate use of
currently existing latrines
- Develop strategy
for promotion of soap (or alternative cleansing material) use
- Ensure regular
and timely project documentation and reporting according to Malteser and
donor standards
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Degree in Public
Health and Sanitation from a recognized University
- Sound experience
in developing Water Safety Plans and Hygiene promotions programmes
- Proven
experience in Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)
- Experience with
rain water harvesting systems (RWHS), also with mobile RWHS
- Working
experience with pastoralist communities in ASAL
- Ability to work
under pressure and independently
- Physical and
mental strength and experience in and willingness to live and work in a
remote project location and under basic conditions
- Fluency in
English and Swahili, knowledge of local Dassanach language is an
additional advantage
- Personality:
self-discipline, diligence, and patience, including a positive sense of
humour and can-do attitude
WASH Engineer
Position
Summary
The WASH Engineer
will be responsible for developing and guiding the programme’s WASH hardware
components such as the construction of tanks, rainwater harvesting systems,
development of shallow wells, selection and promotion of suitable sanitation
hardware options and water quality control under
supervision of the Programme Coordinator and administrative/logistic support by the Country Office in Nairobi.

supervise, coordinate, and implement all WASH related constructions of the
programme in the project area according to proposals and implementation plans.
Primary
Responsibilities and Duties
- Guide pilot
projects for storage tanks, including underground tanks, rain water
surface collection systems, and shallow wells in laggas (dry riverbeds)
- Construct
ferro-cement tanks and train teams in use of ferrocement techniques
- Identify
suitable locations for shallow wells to be constructed at end of dry
season
- Ensure that all
constructions are done in an environmental friendly way
- Quality control
of WASH facilities development
- Ensure regular
and timely project documentation and reporting according to Malteser and
donor standards
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Degree in
Hydrology (Water Engineer) from a recognized University
- Strong technical
skills in development and construction of rain water harvesting systems
including underground tanks and surface rain water harvesting systems
(Community rainwater harvesting systems)
- Proven
experience of at least 2 years of constructing rain water harvesting
systems
- Working experience
with pastoralist communities in ASAL
- Experience with
rain water harvesting systems (RWHS), also with mobile RWHS
- Experience in
the construction of ferro-cement tanks
- Ability to work
under pressure and independently
- Physical and
mental strength and experience in and willingness to live and work in a
remote project location and under basic conditions
- Fluency in
English and Kiswahili, knowledge of local Dassanach language is an asset

contract: minimum 6 months (extendable)
