Fairtrade is the leading
ethical trading label globally and its objective is to improve livelihoods of
producers and workers through trade.
The role
Reporting to the Board of
Directors, the jobholder will be responsible for leading the development and
implementation of FTA’s strategy and provide overall organisational leadership
and direction.
S/he will be responsible
for creating and maintaining innovative and enthusiastic working environments
at all levels of the organisation while providing high quality supervision,
line management and support to staff.
The incumbent will also be
responsible for developing and maintaining strategic relationships within the
Fairtrade global movement, other NGOs, governments, business and other relevant
stakeholders for market access opportunities for producers.
S/he will be responsible
for providing leadership and coordination in planning, budgeting, monitoring
and evaluation of FTA programmes in line with system wide priorities and plans
and in close collaboration with the Global Operations Team and the Board of
Fairtrade International.
In addition, s/he will
drive the implementation of the change programme, providing leadership and support
and delivery to agreed timelines, budget and quality while ensuring all
stakeholders are fully engaged.
S/he will also facilitate
the strategic integration of FTA to expand access to essential services for its
members including the promotion of greater access to technical and market
opportunities for improved livelihoods.
S/he will take lead in
developing FTA’s presence and profile in Africa and globally.
In addition, s/he will
implement the decisions of the FTA General Assembly, and the policies and
strategies approved by the Board of Directors as well as facilitating the
organisational growth of the four regional networks (South, East, West and
North Africa) and their governance structures.
The person
The ideal candidate will
possess:
- a Masters
Degree in Business, Agriculture, Economics Development Studies or related
fields;
- proven
experience in advancing the cause of sustainability and ethical trade for
the benefit of rural communities;
- past
experience in reporting to a Board at executive management level within an
international organisation of similar size and complexity;
- demonstrated
ability to successfully pursue new market opportunities for producers from
Africa;
- proven
experience of project cycle management, ensuring the delivery of high
quality programmes as well as managing internal learning processes across
virtual teams;
- extensive
experience of working with donor partnerships including UK, European,
African as well as American agency funders;
- proven
experience in leading professional staff from diverse backgrounds in a
manner that enhances their confidence and efficiency, builds their
initiative and enables them to function as members of efficient and
effective teams;
- proven
ability to communicate effectively, manage information, execute on plans
and ensure accountability;
- proven
experience in leading change processes within an organisation;
- good
track record of developing productive relationships with key government
officials and other community leaders;
- strong
negotiation, advocacy and communication including excellent presentation
skills;
- extensive
working experience in Africa;
- ability to
effectively advocate for trade justice issues in a highly charged
political environment;
- and
willingness to travel extensively in Africa and globally.
