Bioinformatician - Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Unit

icipe - African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.


icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of 
Bioinformatician in the Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Unit, enrolled on the H3Africa Bioinformatics Network grant. 

Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the appointment will initially be for two years, renewable. 

A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidate.

Overall duties

To provide support for training and data analysis at the Centre, and in collaboration with a network of bioinformaticians in 20 African countries, as well as geneticists and clinical researchers who will be generating large health-related datasets for analysis.

Specific duties

The successful candidate is expected to:
  • Manage and ensure quality control of genomics and other metadata;
  • Design, establish and manage databases to store and share sequencing data; and
  • Develop pipelines for genome assembly, annotation and other computational analyses.
Knowledge required for performing the job

The successful candidate will be expected to have the following skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics computational packages;
  • Solid working knowledge of various bioinformatics packages used for genome data analysis; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in English.
Experience in the following areas will be considered an asset:
  • Skills in Linux installation, configuration and administration;
  • Knowledge of genome sequencing strategies; and
  • Familiarity with concepts in Next Generation Sequencing, Genotyping, Genome Wide Association analysis, SNP/Variant analysis.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • MSc degree in bioinformatics or closely related field.
  • At least one years’ working experience in a bioinformatics position.
  • Proven experience in programming and web-site development.
  • An understanding and working knowledge of advanced computer systems such as high-performance clusters.
Disposition
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills that establish a good working relationship with customers/clients.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and monitor and follow-up on pending matters under minimum supervision.
Reporting

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator.


Research Assistant - Social Science Unit

Research Assistant in the Social Science Unit. 

The position is tenable in Nairobi, Kenya at the Duduville campus. 

This is a local (national) position that offers a two-year contract that is renewable. 

A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidate.

Overall duties

To assist the Social Science Unit Leader in conducting social and economic impact studies of different projects of icipe.

Specific duties

The successful candidate is expected to:
  • Design and implement ex-ante and ex-post evaluations of projects;
  • Using excellent qualitative or quantitative skills, design data collection and its analysis;
  • Contribute to, and write, research publications and other communications;
  • Participate in designing and conducting social, economic, and gender related studies with the project team as required.
Knowledge required for performing the job

The successful candidate will be expected to have the following skills and abilities:
  • Demonstrated interest and capacity to conduct impact assessment studies;
  • Familiarity with different stages of project/programme cycle (design, implementation, supervision, monitoring and evaluation);
  • Strong qualitative, and/or quantitative analysis capabilities;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, and the ability to present coherent and convincing strategic analyses;
  • Experience and capabilities in data collection and data analysis will be an added advantage.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • A completed MSc in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development Studies, or related field, optimally with relevant experience in rural development in developing countries.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Two years’ work experience in sub-Saharan Africa.

Electricians at Duduville and Mbita Campuses

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and  Ethiopia.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit three (3) Electricians, two of whom will be based at our icipe Thomas Odhiambo Campus (ITOC), Mbita Point and one at Duduville campus, Kasarani, Nairobi, and will work with a team of other electricians in carrying out various functions.

A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidates.

Responsibilities
 
Overall duties
  • Electrical installation works.
Specific duties
  • Carry out electrical repairs and maintenance of distribution lines.
  • Undertake installation of electrical fittings and accessories.
  • Carry out machine repairs and the maintenance of electrical appliances.
  • Carry out repairs of refrigerators, cold rooms and air conditioners.
  • Maintain a record of all meters, power fluctuations and water pump operations.
  • Maintain generator(s) operations.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned from time to time.
Requirements/Qualifications

The ideal candidate should:
  • Be a holder of a KCE or equivalent, followed by diploma in electrical engineering or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution;
  • Have two years hands-on experience doing similar tasks as those outlined above.
Disposition

The candidate must also possess the following attributes:
  • Be able to work independently and with minimum supervision;
  • Have good organisational skills to manage his/her time well;
  • Be prepared to work on weekends and public holidays when needed;
  • Be hard working and able to follow instructions.
