Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel to Somalia


Organizational Unit: FAO-Somalia
Duration: 3 Months with possible extension
Eligible Candidates: Kenyan and Somali Nationalities
Anticipated Start Date: 1st April   2012
Under the overall supervision of the FAO Somalia O-I-C and of the Emergency Coordinator and the Programme Coordinator , and the direct supervision of the Information Management Unit Advisor,  contributes to efforts that monitor projects outcomes against work plan and targets, including of the Service Providers for the overall FAO Somalia Programmes.
The incumbent performs the following duties:

·         Assist in collecting data and information (namely spatial) on the activities of each component of the FAO emergency and programme components ;
·         Assist in compiling and analyzing the data for each components of the emergency and programmes;
·         Design and develop spatial data sets and maps for the units
·         Utilize existing FAO SO assets (spatial and statistical data sets) in SWALIM, FSNAU (databases, metadata)
·         Follow FAO SO (SWALIM, FSNAU) standards and formats for data and metadata storage (databases, tools, protocols)
·         Liaise with GIS and Remote Sensing experts in SWALIM and FSNAU as required
·         Develop mapping templates and designs and seek approval from supervisor and reporting team
·         Liaises with Somali counterparts (local NGOs, Associations, others)
·         Design maps for reporting team in a timely and organized manner
·         Maintain a mapping storage and retrieval system (on shared folders and databases) for staffs to easily locate output maps to paste into reports
·         Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Diploma level education in related field or compensated by additional years of experience or by specialized training in desktop mapping, GIS, or related field.
Experience: At least two years of experience in thematic mapping applications (ArcView, MapInfo, Idrisi, or other software)
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English; Working knowledge of Somali
IT Skills: Ability to effectively use standard MS Office software, especially experience with database and content management systems.
Competencies:
Systematic and efficient approach to work assignments, good judgment and analytical ability. Ability to manipulate large data sets, and Excellent attention to details. Basic understanding of FAO Procedures.
Travel: Willingness to travel to Somalia and relocate if required
