Caritas Switzerland and Caritas Luxembourg has been implementing projects in Somaliland since 1995. The focus of the projects has been Adult Education, Income Generation, WASH and vocational Skills training. The projects supporting education sector has focused on vocational education, literacy and numeracy and life skills develop-ment.
The target population has been the most vulnerable, marginalized and poverty stricken groups with a spe-
cial focus to women. In additional to supporting the disadvantaged these programmes also support and build the
capacity of partner organisations which includes Non Government Organisations, hereto referred to as Non

Presently the ongoing education project is entitled “Strengthening Non-State Actors in Non-Formal Education and
Vocational Skills” and is funded by European Commission. The partners in this action include Caritas Luxembourg

The overarching objec-tive of the action is to contribute to poverty reduction, through building on actions that address expressed local community needs in the areas of literacy and numeracy, skills training and business development.
To facilitate teaching and learning of the literacy programme Caritas has developed teachers and learners work-
books that are used by the teachers and the adult learners. These teaching and learning materials are specifically
written for use by adult literacy and numeracy (L&N) teachers and the illiterate women of Somaliland as the
primary beneficiaries of the learning worksheets.

The consultant will train the trainers on the interpretation of the content and the best approaches to teaching adults leading to a clear understanding of the content by the teachers and the learners and the best use of the teaching and learning materials for effective teaching and learn-ing.

Key tasks & re-sponsibilities
Visit a sample of literacy centres to identify key indicators on the effectiveness and methodology the workbooks
are being used by adult teachers and learners with the objectives of improving and strengthening use of the
workbooks in teaching and learning literacy and numeracy in Somaliland. The consultant will facilitate training the
trainers on;
•Use of the L and N materials in applying adult education pedagogy through practical-oriented training, differ-
entiating functional adult teaching pedagogy from formal classroom teaching.
•Preparation and use of schemes of work, lesson plans and record of work covered based on the worksheets
and teachers guide.
•Understanding the content in the workbooks and teachers guide
•Preparation and use of teaching aids made from locally available materials
•Identification of samples of affirmative action in the workbooks strengthening gender issues and their appli-
cation by trainers and teachers to awaken interest in human right issues and their right to education.
•Approaches in teaching on crosscutting issues such as civil and human rights, nutrition, public health, FGM
and HIV/Aids.
